Heterosexual contact is the most common mode of HIV transmission in India that is largely linked to sex work. This paper outlines the results of a study which assessed the non-use of condoms in sex work and with regular sex partners by female sex workers (FSWs), and identified its associations that could assist in planning HIV prevention programmes.

Every two years, in compliance with the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS adopted in June 2001, Member States submit country reports on progress made in the response to the AIDS epidemic in their country. The new UNGASS Guidelines on Construction of Core Indicators for 2010 reporting are to assist Member States in preparing and submitting their Country Progress reports.

The challenge of preventing transmission is compounded by a tradition of polygamous marriage, yet efforts to prevent and treat AIDS have expanded rapidly. Gilles Peress returned to Rwanda for the first time since photographing the immediate aftermath of the 1994 genocide. He spent time with people enrolled for antiretroviral treatment in the capital, Kigali, as well as in rural areas.
